Maybe you're overreacting. Most probably your sendmail server just
crashed for some reason...

Manually reboot what? the server or just sendmail?

You can check which program bound to the port by looking at the /proc/
filesystem on your box. An easy way to do this, is to download the
program pidport. Then you can just write
pidport 25
And that will tell you which program has bound to the port.
