I figured out where my problem was.  Appparently, the kernel was not fully
compiling all of my options, therefore no update to the kernel.  I was
taking the resulting kernel and assuming that it had the options compiled.
Glad I was able to figure that one out, it was making me slightly bonkers.

On the other hand, having the problems that I did with a simple recompile of
the kernel is a little unsettling.  I would expect that I should be able to
add and remove features from the kernel without experiencing this level of
difficulty (at one point had to edit the Makefile and the kernel to get it
to compile).  I am thinking of removing the data from the machine and
performing a restore from CD and then attempting a recompile.  Perhaps there
was some left over from the Cobalt manufacturing process that was causing
these issues.  I'll keep you all informed.
