One of the "tools" in your "toolbox" should be PortSentry. It has a
complimentary piece of software called LogCheck. Both are freeware from
http://www.psionic.com. Further, you should look into getting SNORT,
another freeware product from http://www.snort.org/.
All three are relatively painless to install and configure and are
wonderful tools in your anti-hacking toolkit.
