I'll second Graeme - lsof is a great tool.

I compiled lsof_4.55 from source on a RaQ2 earlier this year.  I'm pretty
sure it was just the standard "./configure, make, make install" so give it a
try.  You can always hold off on "make install" and run the program from
your install directory until you're comfortable with installing the binary
and man page to the standard locations.
