Just to clarify, the original post said :

My answer was based on the impression that he wanted to recompile it, not
upgrade it. I would agree that upgrading would not be wise unless you
understand Cobalt/Sun's modifications.

Additionally, 'rpm -qa' lists all the packages on the machine
