Thanks for the tip. I'll change the MySQL port.  If you could point me in
the right direction for using SSH, I'd be more than happy to learn it.

By the way, have you ever seen or heard of anything like this?  It seems as
though the services in question

Um, you're allowing the world to see your MySQL server?  I suggest you
disable its networking support... see the PDF manual.  You can still
connect locally, via Unix sockets.  If you NEED to provide MySQL access to
a remote box, you might want to run it on another port or access it only
through an SSH tunnel, by binding it to only the local interface.  Oh, and
I suggest you run SSH instead of telnet and FTP. :) Sorry I didn't answer
your question directly.
