How about just keeping backup RPMs for the last 3 patches/upgrades?
Doesn't have to be all of them, just the most recent ones. (Since usually a backstep like this would just entail going back before one or two patches.)
I think this might be manageable size-wise; unless all 3 patches were the OS mega-upgrades. ;)
