I agree. And I haven't seen it. I'd like to. Could you please give us
a step-by-step scenario on your own RaQ (having us look at something
such as "http://www.yourdomain.com/nonexistent.html", and then I'll try
it on my system (which uses my own error pages).

Sorry, I can't give exact details, and I don't have a test server any
more, so I have to go from memory, but it seems like all I did was
create a self signed cert for the primary site.
