Seems like I remember having this problem installing something.
I think it was because some of the symbolic links were missing. I think
I fixed it on mine, but I can't remember exactly what it was before.
Here's what I have now though, maybe check it against yours:
$ ls -l /usr/lib/libssl*
/usr/lib/libssl.a
/usr/lib/libssl.so -> /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.5a
/usr/lib/libssl.so.0 -> libssl.so.0.9.6
/usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.5a
/usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.6
/usr/lib/libssl.so.1 -> libssl.so.0.9.6
I have two different versions on there, so you probably won't see
duplicates, but the important thing (I believe) is taht you have links
called libssl.so, libssl.so.1 and libssl.so.0 that should point to your
libssl.so.0.0.X file.

Eric,
I have OpenSSL/0.9.6b loaded. But be d*mned if I know where the lib's
are. I had tried the --with-ssl=DIR option a number of times with
different paths but always got negative results.
