Using the gui to change DNS completely rewrites the entire contents of
the /etc/named directory, using only the contents of
/etc/named/records.  I'm not sure whether it rewrites /etc/named.conf
from scratch or just makes changes, but it certainly destroys all the
records in /etc/named, and then rewrites them from the contents of
/etc/named/records.
