I respect your opinion, otherwise I wouldn't post this. However, I find your
argument a little naive. As this discussion barely applies to a list
supposedly dedicated to Sun Cobalt SECURITY, I will keep it brief.

Sun have some major problems to deal with right now, principally that they
are a Hardware company who have lost their way in the Software arena. Sun
are becoming more and more vulnerable due to their addiction to fighting M$
in the courts and the popular consciousness.

I base all my applications on JAVA as it is a thoroughbred OO language which
is difficult to fault. I want JAVA to flourish as much as the next
developer, I want to it retain its core principles and as such all legal
action to ensure that is welcome.

Sun have traditionally been able to extract large premiums for shiny
hardware. This has given them the margins to experiment with, and we are
beneficiaries of this innovation. JAVA, NFS, LDAP to mention a few.

Sun did not create LDAP.... It came with one of the company's they acquired..

Sun has dominated the Unix environment due to this Hardware / R&D equation
which was based on its dominance/margins in the hardware space. Software
rarely delivers hardware margins (unless you are the Beast).

Sun now has to compete with Intel hardware which can deliver the same
performance as the Sun high-end kit. People like you and me now extract
better performance from our edgy Intel based kit than we were ever allowed
with our Solaris based heavy iron.

Sun is spending all its money extending its software platforms such as Sun
ONE, they are trying to compete with a software giant to control a software
space that is changing and even performs better on others hardware. At the
same time their stock has continued to fall as it pays less attention to its
own hardware products, buying Cobalt was a good strategic move but
integration has been painful between two disparate ideologies.

Lets really make JAVA fly on pure performance, bring MAJC back to the fore,
let Tremblay off the leash, their stock would jump on the promise of a new
direction on Hardware/software performance equipment.

Sun's future is based on their past successful principles. Give the world
leadership with systems that blaze past the competition with reliable
transactions and in particular hardware optimization. M$ is going to screw
up everything they try to do in this space anyway, best to leave them to
their own fate.

M$ will remain the world's biggest joke, just one that few laugh at, yet.
Sun shouldn't join them to beat them, they should get out of the trenches
and make for higher ground. The market awaits.

They need to get rid of the internal struggle they have in the company first.
