Two possibilities for you. The first is PAM. This basically tries to
auth you against your /etc/shadow file, so if it is the same username
in both files, google how to turn pam off for that htaccess file.
Second possibility is an improperly configured htaccess
file--specifically the path to the '.htpassword' file should be
verified as accurate.
Other than that, there's not much that can be suggested without more
information. Hope this helps...
