I did not have this issue on my RAQ4, but, I did have it on our current
internal Linux distribution.
I found that adding
set backupcopy=yes
to my .exrc fixed this problem. I did not investigate much futher, but I
believe the defaults for vim may have changed for our internal Linux
distribution and VIM on the RAQ4 after the most recent patches (which I have
not applied yet).
