while this may have worked for him, I can clearly say that openssh

complie with the default compiler and no patches.
I beg to differ. Maybe the source RPM's will, but not the source
tarball in my experience. Had the same monitor_fdpass.c problems with
OpenSSH 3.6.1p1 too. It should be well documented in the archives.
