How do you configure samba to allow read/write access and not feel that you
have opened a huge security hole in your box?

Forget using the built-in backup system ... it is simply unworkable.
IMHO you would be much better off if you installed Dantz Retrospect Backup
on your NT machine and "sucked" the data from your SMB shares.
Retrospect will allow you to backup to all manner of devices including a 2nd
disk in your NT box. Retrospect will run as a service under NT so it can be
fully scheduled and you can leave your NT box secured. It will encrypt
backups if you choose so even removeable media will be secure.
>From a monitoring point of view, Retrospect can generate reports in html
which you can view remotely via any browser and it can also email backup
reports.
Check it out at;
