This sounds like a DNS issue.
Sendmail doesn't like to have the mail serviced by the physical name.
Both versions accomplish the same thing, but using the CNAME record is
technically correct.  In many cases sendmail will happily work with
the first version - but not always.

Bad:
abc.com.  in A    1.2.3.4
abc.com.  in MX   abc.com.

Good:
abc.com.       in A      1.2.3.4
mail.abc.com.  in CNAME  abc.com.
abc.com.       in MX     mail.abc.com.
