RE: [cobalt-security] Velociraptor performance/functionality query

Scott

Thank you for your enquiry. I will try and help you where I can. Before I
joined Cobalt I worked for an ISP in the UK ( Star Internet ) who provided a
managed Firewall product using Raptor 6.0. The Velocirapotor is based on
Raptor 6.5 a much improved version. It is one of the strongest firewalls
for price in the market and is used by one of the firewall testing
organisations to test and benchmark other firewalls by. To give you some
idea the US department of Defence recently placed a large order for
Velociraptor.

We have not done a comparison of the two products yet but we are trying to
get an independent test done as it is of value to the potential customers
like yourselves.

The management of the firewall is a lot easier than 6.0 was but does take
some getting used to. A firewall is a complex appliance and knowledge is
required to make it secure as with a lot of things a little knowledge is a
dangerous thing. In a recent hacking competition the Velociraptor withstood
half a million attempts at being hacked over a 2 week period. I believe
that Checkpoint failed within 20 minutes ( don't quote me on this ) I will
try and get the precise details for you.

At Cobalt we have used our knowledge and hardware to produce the appliance
in conjunction with Axent now Symantec. Symantec is fully responsible for
supporting the customer. In previous work and now with Cobalt I have found
Axent to be very proactive in their support, I hope that Symantec can build
on this.

I hope this comes across as a balanced view of the product even though I now
work for Cobalt. If I can provide you with any further info please ask off
list. I will try and get any reports we have to you in the next few days.
I am at a Velociraptor Conference in the UK next Tuesday.

Regards

Gavin

Subject: [cobalt-security] Velociraptor performance/functionality query

The company I work for is reviewing Firewall systems and is leaning toward
the Nokia/Checkpoint solution. However, we have to date been displeased with
their support structure. So I have been asked to look into the Velociraptor.
I checked the archives but, info on the Velociraptor is sparse (similar to
the product documentation on the Cobalt site ). So I post these questions to
the group:

1) Anyone done a comparison of the Nokia vs. Velociraptor product ?
2) Anyone using the Velociraptor product ?
3) General thoughts from Velociraptor users on ease of management and
security the box provides ?
4) How well is this supported ?

TIA.
