Goto the RaQ, and boot it from the ROM kernel.  You can set this from the
control panel (more info in the RaQ manual).  If you have an ISP, ask them
to do this for you.

Once you've got it back up on the ROM kernel, download the RPM for your
old kernel from ftp.cobaltnet.com and install it.  Reboot the RaQ.

To get the new update working, you probably have loadable kernel modules
or a sniffer/IDS running.  You'll need to disable those.
