NO!  Don't remove the in.telnetd executable!  As you said, if SSH were to
become unavailable, you would have to re-enable telnet (hopefully on a
different port).

To disable telnet, either turn it off in the GUI (if you can; I don't have
the GUI handy), or comment out the telnet line in "/etc/inetd.conf" .
