There is a small script available at http://cobalt-aid.sourceforge.net which
saves you from all the hassles. Just drop it in /etc/cron.daily/ or
/etc/cron.weekly/ and it'll then automatically check for the availability of
new patches for your machine. If there are any which you don't have
installed, it'll fetch and install them. Once that's done the admin gets an
email notification. I use it in fourty boxes and so far it didn't cause any
problems.
The only backdraw of that (as I see it): Sometimes you'd probably prefer to
wait a day or two with installing a new patch to see if someone on the list
encounters problems with it. If you automate the installation, then you don't
have that choice.
