You can upgrade apache, but you shouldn't.  Once you make that big of a
change, your system becomes "fragile" in that you can no longer trust
the cobalt updates not to break your changes.  (written with a big grin
on my face)

If your goal is to add php to a raq3, just use the DSO (--with-apxs I
believe) method of installing PHP.  You might have to search for the
apxs command and feed it in, I seem to remember the raq2 couldn't find
it.  If you use this method, you don't need the apache sources on your
computer.

If you do want to upgrade apache, back up everything apache related,
keeping in mind that there are two httpd binaries, one for the main
website and one for the admin interface.  Back up the stuff for both.

The only trick to upgrading apache is to use the layout command to make
sure files go into the right place.  When you run ./configure, use this
(I believe):
--with-layout=redhat

That will make sure that all of the files go into the correct places.

Please confirm all of these options before you use them, I don't
currently have an apache source tree available.
